New York, NY - January 4th, 2021 - We are overjoyed to announce the launch of The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art, an online art platform that pays its artists.
The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art exists to provide an international online platform for the most timely, diverse, and preeminent artists. mowna is a for profit art museum, collection, and store that pays artists via ticket sales. mowna hosts shows, events, festivals, parties, and an online Biennial. mowna is an experiment, a fun, thoughtful, beautifully designed space, that explores technology through unique exhibitions and interactive art experiences. mowna is an ethical art platform that is committed to the greater good for all.
Conceived on October 13th, 2020 by co-founders cari ann shim sham* and Joey Zaza, the mowna site was launched on December 9th and will premiere the Opening Show from January 8th to April 29th, 2021. Fully funded by its visitors, an $18 ticket gives temporary, 24-hour access to the museum, or a $15 per month membership provides continuous access to experience the wildest and newfangledest art.
mowna has launched a free Call for Submissions for its international Biennial happening from April 30th to September 22nd, 2021. Submissions for the 2021 mowna Biennial are pouring in from around the world, and we are excited and honored to put on such a strong show for the world to enjoy. The 2021 mowna Biennial will feature 100 international artists. mowna will close its wild and newfangled year with a special guest curated show.
Made by artists for artists, mowna recognizes that the current situation for artists is dire. Artists are struggling, need financial relief now, and a space to show their art. As large institutions cancel shows, the art that is being made currently will not be seen, might be lost, or perhaps considered irrelevant by a show that is scheduled as far off as 2022. With all of this going on we are currently witnessing a two year gap in the art world's exhibition schedule. The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art addresses this crisis through a humane platform facilitated by a sustainable business model to exhibit and support a diverse range of art and artists right now.
The Opening Show features a variety of wild and newfangled artists and mediums, including the first zoom mini opera, "all decisions will be made by consensus," by New York Times acclaimed composer Kamala Sankaram. VR works include Best VR winner from NYC Indie Film Fest, "The Parksville Murders," by Opera on Tap. An animated underwater exploration, "shimmer," by Xavier Camarillo, Mary Hale, and cari ann shim sham* is featured along with a 360 underwater dance with humans and dolphins by Chisa Hidaka and Benjamin Harley for Dolphin Dance Project. Aaron Samuel Davis, one of the newly named Dance Magazine's top 25 to watch, will grace the museum with an original dance project. The award winning film "Two Seconds After Laughter," by renowned choreographer and filmmaker David Roussève, is part of a collection of dance films that include work by Mark Freeman, A. Salomòn, Kristen Lauth Shaeffer, My-Linh Le, Deborah Kelly, Jody Sperling, Adi Halfan, and Virginie Combet. Interactive multi-media works created by Maria Lantin and Alex Hass, and Siori Kitajima and Joe Minadeo will keep the audience engaged for hours of play. An interactive poetry generator by Maxine Flasher-Düzgüneş and Troy Kelley will be a way for visitors to leave their own poetic creation in mowna. Other works include video art by Angie Moon Conte, stereoscopic animations by Munro Ferguson, a live performance dealing with intimacy and technology by Ori Flomin and an experimental recording from The BASS QUARTET: Ran Livneh, Scott Colberg, Michael Montgomery, and Ari Folman-Cohen. Computer generated works include @hmmworldview, a bot that combines the most popular news images to give an hourly snapshot of the worldview as portrayed by the media. A collection of experimental photographs and Magic Stacks by Joey Zaza will premiere along with a live performance on January 8th at 2pm EST to open the show by Siddiquie, Aly Ostovar, and Nitsan Margaliot.
The Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art is dedicated to storing artworks so that they can be preserved for future enjoyment and use. mowna's collection consists of art that is shared digitally with the museum by the artists we curate. Artists retain all rights to the artwork and may remove their work from the collection at any time. The collection is visible to members only. It is a resource of digital art for the world to use for education, enjoyment, and research. It is also a way that the museum is of service to our artists; we provide a storage space for their work beyond their personal archive and we give all artists in the collection a lifelong membership to the museum and its collection.
mowna is pro-artist, gives artists creative control over how their artwork is exhibited, and works with artists to support their vision through our technologies. mowna allows artists to retain full rights to their work, which they are able to show elsewhere. mowna does not own the work, we simply store it, and the artists can remove it at any time. Beyond our passion to support artists, we are obsessed with humane practices for technology and ethics that are pro-individual. We do not exploit artists. We are not a social or star based economy of influencers. Our museum is free of advertisements, pop ups, and notifications. We want our visitors to enjoy art without any distraction, surveillance, or manipulation. mowna commits to no editing of artwork, no ownership of artwork, no copyright ownership of artwork, no censorship of artwork, and the allowance of fair use within artwork that we exhibit.

cari ann shim sham* is a wild artist working at the intersections of dance & technology. she makes still & moving images, movement, sound, experiential interactive spaces & street art stickers. she is an edible mushroom hunter, a firm believer in science, a constant practitioner of unconditional friendliness, a dedicated proponent of anti-racism, a critic of silicon valley, a ritual worshiper of nature, a fervent feminist, an active artivist, a daily yoga & meditation junkie, and an emphatic lover of animals.
she is actively engaged in the disruption of negatively addictive crowdsourced platforms that expect user generated content for free in a scheme to sell advertising to manipulate & influence its users.

Joey Zaza is a New York City based artist, working in photography, software, video, sound, and installation. Zaza has worked in a variety of different industries, from process improvement in pharmaceuticals such as Bristol Myers Squibb, to software engineering at nonprofit tech startups such as Action Button by Speakable. He has worked on communications data and night vision cameras as a contractor for the United States military, as well as built a data platform to manage data for MTV, Nickelodeon, and Paramount. Zaza has a BS and MS in Industrial and Systems Engineering, as well as an MBA with a focus on entrepreneurship and global business strategy. He is currently focusing his efforts on building the Museum of Wild and Newfangled Art, which he envisions becoming the world's premier art platform, that compensates artists a livable wage for their work. digitalzaza.com
